We are all affected by our environment and, for many of us, this can cause unnecessary stress, worry and physical tension. Foot reflexology is a very gentle treatment that assists the body through relaxation in order to restore a sense of balance and wellbeing.
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
This therapy evolved from Zone Therapy in the early 1900’s. Dr. Fitzgerald observed that direct pressure on certain areas of the foot could produce an anaesthetic effect in a corresponding part of the body.
Reflexology was developed in the 1930’s by a massage therapist - one of Dr. Fitzgerald’s assistants. She showed that congestion and tension in specific parts of the foot mirrored congestion and tension found in associated parts of the body.
So, reflexology employs specific pressure techniques on precise reflex points on the feet. It is based on the premise that you are basically treating your entire body by stimulating nerve endings in your feet in a methodical sequence.
HOW DOES REFLEXOLOGY WORK?
This deeply relaxing treatment involves applying pressure to points on the feet to help prevent and treat a wide range of mental, physical and emotional problems.
The premise that there is a definitive relationship between areas of the feet and other parts of the body allows me to identify tensions and imbalances in your system. In other words, the feet are actually a ‘map’ of the body and, as such, can be gently worked on to stimulate circulation, release toxins and restore balance and vitality.
Dietary and lifestyle recommendations may be offered as part of your treatment.
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY GOOD FOR?
RELAXATION
With all the modern day pressures - overwork, exams, technology overload, commuting … we need to remember how to relax. Massage soothes aches and pains and releases physical and mental tension.
CIRCULATION
Working the feet aids both blood and nerve supply in flowing more freely. This relaxes your legs and feet by releasing physical tensions. Improved circulation brings oxygen and nutrients to the tissues which helps to repair and restore your body.
REBALANCING
Treating the entire foot, in effect, treats your entire body. So, all your organs, glands and joints are stimulated and nurtured to reverse the effects of stress and free the body to seek its own homeostasis (balance).
COMMON QUESTIONS
IS REFLEXOLOGY SAFE IF I AM PREGNANT?
Yes, providing care is taken when working on gynaecological reflex areas - or they can be omitted. If there is a history of miscarriage I probably would avoid treatment in the first trimester - the same advice would be given for many other therapeutic treatments.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS REFLEXOLOGY?
Most clients find it extremely relaxing and calming. It quietens the mind and therefore you get the beneficial effects of a healing experience.
CAN ANYONE GET A REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT?
On the whole, yes. Unless in the case of severe foot pain, sensitivity, gout or operation. In such cases - other therapies may be more appropriate.
WILL REFLEXOLOGY BE PAINFUL?
Only if an inappropriate degree of pressure is applied. I always check the correct amount of pressure is being used. Any badly injured area of the foot should never have direct pressure applied.
